electric Driveline Solutions
Intelligent torque delivery
GKN's electric driveline technologies turn the electric motor’s high-speed output into high torque at the wheel. The technology is essential for automakers that want to offer drivers the option of an efficient electric AWD hybrid or a pure electric vehicle.
GKN has been pioneering the development and production of eAxles and eTransmissions since 2002 and its technology features on vehicles including the BMW i8, Volvo XC90 and Porsche 918 Spyder. With more than 300,000 systems produced, the company’s experience and expertise in eAWD is unparalleled.
GKN is a full-systems supplier, providing software development, system integration and supply chain management to support the introduction of new brand-aligned electrified driving experiences.
GKN eDrive technology range
GKN has developed a family of single-speed eAxles for compact car applications. The lightweight design is designed for easy integration onto global platforms and generates up to 2,000Nm and 70kW of additional torque and power – enough to achieve speeds of up to 125km/h in pure electric mode.
GKN launched the world’s first two-speed eAxle, which offers a vehicle electric power across its entire speed range. Giving the electric motor an additional gear ratio improves acceleration and pure electric range, benefiting both driving dynamics and CO2 emissions. GKN’s award-winning two-speed eAxle also enables the motor and all its associated systems to be downsized, reducing mass and further increasing efficiency.
Developed to meet tight packaging constraints and high efficiency targets, GKN’s co-axial eAxle is designed so that the transmission input and output are on the same axis, helping save space. The system incorporates an intelligent disconnect clutch technology that helps further enhance efficiency.
GKN’s Multimode eTransmission helps combine the best of electric and combustion engine power, enabling the vehicle to move seamlessly between three different drive modes from two power sources, depending on road conditions and the type of driving required.
Integrated eDrive systems
GKN Driveline has developed a complete electric drive system for plug-in hybrid vehicles. The system starts production in 2019 on a global platform from a European vehicle manufacturer. The new module integrates a water-cooled electric motor and inverter with a single speed eAxle reduction gearbox, generating 65kW of power and delivering up to 2,000Nm of torque to the rear wheels.
