GKN man heads for North Pole
Type: Archived news, 03/04/2006

GKN encourages its employees to support good causes and to develop themselves both within and outside the work environment.

It is with this in mind that GKN are pleased to sponsor Mike Dann in the 2006 Polar Challenge.

Mike is a member of the A380 Project Team at GKN Aerospace on the Isle of Wight and will be competing in a race to the Magnetic North Pole in April in aid of The Laura Crane Trust.

The Laura Crane Trust is a charity which funds much needed research specifically into cancers affecting 13-25 year olds. Research funded by the Trust will ultimately bring increased understanding of cancer in this age group, better prevention and improved treatments and hopefully save young lives.

Racing in teams of 3, competitors must haul a 90kg sledge, containing their food and equipment over the 320 miles of the race course. The challenge will take approximately 4 weeks to complete but before they begin they must trek for four days to reach the starting line!

The race will take the teams through the harsh Arctic environment where the average air temperature during the race will be between -20 and -35 Celsius. With wind chill it can drop to -65 Celcius.

Mike and his team mates Tim Tottenham and Simon Edmundson have been training for the expedition for many months and in January attended a training week in Austria learning drills, survival techniques and skiing for the first time with their loaded pulks.

Mike and his team head off to Canada on the 4th April.
