The GKN Code describes how we conduct business in order to build a long term, sustainable future for GKN and ensure our business continues to be run in an ethical and socially responsible manner.
All GKN employees and Board members must follow the Code. It sets out our company Values, which guide us in the way we do business, and the standards of behaviour expected in support of these Values.
Health and safety
The health and safety of our employees is GKN’s number one priority. We believe in providing a safe working environment and are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
Our goal is zero preventable accidents. To support this we have a number of GKN-developed and globally applied behavioural safety programmes. These highlight potential safety issues, share best practice and help to minimise hazards at our sites. Led by our Group-wide communications and awareness programme, thinkSAFE!, this consistent approach helps us work towards our strategic objective of driving operational excellence.
Health and safety certification
We require all our manufacturing plants to achieve certification to the health and safety standard OHSAS 18001 or equivalent, and the vast majority continue to be certified while a small number are working toward certification.
Health and safety performance
We measure our health and safety performance through two metrics: accident frequency rate (AFR) is used to track the number of lost time accidents and accident severity rate (ASR) records the number of days lost due to accidents and occupational ill health. Against these metrics we have made substantial progress over the last ten years and our performance compares favourably when benchmarking against other manufacturing organisations. Auditing is key to maintaining safety standards. In 2015, we carried out 59 health and safety audits, with support from external experts where necessary. We shared the key learnings and best practice from these audits across the Group.
Learning and development
GKN has a structured approach to career and personal development, and supports all employees to develop their capabilities and realise their aspirations.
We are constantly looking to improve our people, processes and products to help deliver superior value to our stakeholders. GKN is committed to the development of its employees, offering leadership programmes to facilitate continuous development among its management and a focus on its people at the core of GKN’s growth strategy.
Support for all employees through training is a cornerstone of the GKN DNA. Development processes and frameworks chart employees’ progress through both managerial and technical careers, with focused assessment and training to provide the right support to achieve success. GKN completes an annual organisation-wide planning process to ensure it is continually developing the people and capabilities required to deliver the business plan.
We offer leadership development programmes to facilitate continuous learning and growth for our leaders and our online training support tool, MyGKN Academy, enables our employees to access a wide range of development options in up to 20 languages. More than 20,000 online courses were completed by GKN employees in 2015.

At GKN we believe that engaging all our employees is positive for both our people and our business, and key to our future success. We aim to build high performing teams by understanding and improving the everyday work experience for all of our people.
A global employee engagement survey aims to make GKN a better place to work for all our employees and, on a rolling basis, all GKN employees are invited to take part in Positive Climate Index (PCI) sessions, which enable us to measure their satisfaction with GKN. HR teams and Site Steering Committees respond to the issues raised in the sessions, and drive cultural improvements where necessary. PCI performance is now an essential measure of business performance and is a key element of all monthly divisional operational reviews.
We believe in speaking up when we see behaviour which is wrong. We actively promote the importance of our confidential employee disclosure hotline, available to all employees who can raise concerns in their own languages, anonymously if they prefer. It is hosted by an external, independent company and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Matters reported are investigated and feedback is always provided to the caller.
