GKN in the community

At GKN, we have a proud history of working with the communities in which we operate. We believe building relationships with people in our locations is crucial to our success and the sustainability of our operations. We’re committed to using our skills, time and money to help these communities.

Not only do we support projects and activities in the local areas, we also seek to minimise any negative impact on our communities, pride ourselves on promoting good business practice, create job opportunities and support the introduction of people into the world of work.  At all times, we are sensitive to the cultural issues which play a major part in the life of the local communities and wider societies where our operations are located.

We support charities and community organisations, as well as provide opportunities for employees to volunteer and fundraise, in a variety of ways, including:
  • providing paid time off for employees involved in community activities

  • fundraising for local causes

  • operating a charitable giving scheme

  • providing volunteer support for community projects

  • building links with local education establishments

  • offering work experience placements

During the early 1800s, GKN provided schooling for its workforce and their children and access to clean drinking water in the town of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. Times have changed, but GKN’s commitment to supporting the causes and charities that are important to our global community has not, and now, over 200 years on, our hard work continues. We operate a Hearts of Gold programme which recognises the contributions to our local communities by groups and individuals from across GKN, whose efforts make a sustainable difference to the lives of people in the communities of which we are a part.
